Sidewalk Labs LLC, the urban innovation unit of Alphabet Inc., parent company of Google, has applied to develop a 12-acre strip in downtown Toronto, according to two people familiar with the plans. The area in interest is at Queens Quay by the harbourfront with infrastructure that will support a mix of residential, commercial, and tech innovation uses.

Although details of the proposal are not yet public, sources say the bid aligns with the company's ambition to create a connected, high-tech city or district from the ground up. Other cities discussed as possible locations for this high-tech district include Denver and Detroit.
